A Dream Come True!

Have you heard? The Differed Action is now official. The life of many undocumented immigrants will change due to this. Finally the Memphis City School slogan, “Every Student, Every Day, College Bound,” will be followed through for all those who have the desire to do so.  This bill gives undocumented immigrants a working permit which would allow them to work legally and obtain a drivers license; so that these individuals can put themselves through college. However, it does not apply to every single person; there are requirements, some of which are being 30 years of age or younger, having arrived to the U.S. under the age of sixteen, are currently in school, have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED), and have never been convicted for any felony. Although, the Differed action is a major milestone that has been reached, Dreamers all over the country will not give up until the entire Dream Act is passed. This bill allows these immigrants not only to get a work permit, but it will help them go to college by making financial aid more attainable.

I personally think that the Differed Action gives those smart, talented, hardworking students an opportunity to in a way prove themselves to the country, and those who deceive them; to come out of the invisibility that they are undergoing because of their legal status. It gives these young people a pathway to success, a success that they are being held back from. In many cases they were brought into the country as mere toddlers or very early teens, at that age we have no say so in our parent’s decisions. Although, parents want the best for their children, that ambition for a better life blurs their judgment; they do not understand that in the long run this “better life” will not get their children were they envision them. Yet, this bill is what these parents wanted for their children all along. It is the purpose for all of their sacrifice, a sacrifice than until now was not worthwhile.

  2. I believe this is a wonderfully written and thought provoking post. I know MANY students who this will help greatly! I think of many students who have the GPA and ACT scores but couldn't go to college because they were not funded because of their status. It is painful how republican controlled states are working so hard to discourage immigration with their legislation, such as in Arizona and Alabama; this is a country OF immigrants, whether their ancestors came here years ago or a person's parents envisioned a better life for their families recently. I have spoken out pubicly about this topic because I have seen very intelligent and deserving students be denied an education in our country! Thank you for this post!
